Before setting up Kindling in 2009, Lily worked for Bradford Metropolitan District Council managing the work of the Play Team and delivering playwork training. This role included overseeing Bradford’s first self-build adventure playground and a number of open access, inclusive play opportunities for children. The role also included working with a wide range of settings and schools to improve the quality of provision, delivering training which included experiential workshops and accredited training up to Level 3.

In Bradford Lily was actively involved in the Forest School network working in partnership with Bradford Community Environment Project to develop and support Forest Schools across the district. This built on work Lily had done previously with Herefordshire Nature Trust.

Janet trained to become a Forest School Practitioner in 2013; her love of the outdoors and her passion to see young people accepted as they are and able to play in nature, very much the driving force behind this.

In 2014 Janet started her journey at Lime Tree Primary Academy where she took on the role to lead Forest School and develop the outdoor learning for the children and staff. There she has developed the school grounds, supported teachers with outdoor learning as well as lead the forest school sessions which have recognised provider status from the Forest School Association.

Janet has been facilitating the Trafford teaching School Alliance Forest School network group for the last 5 years and has experience of supporting other schools to develop their outdoor settings. Janet delivers workshops and grounds development work for Learning through landscapes and is a LTL accredited professional.

Delivering Forest School training has always been a dream for Janet as she loves to share her passion for working with children and connecting with nature. Now, training alongside Lily Horseman of Kindling Play and Training, this is a new beginning of Janet’s Forest School journey and hopefully an exciting one for you as you embark on your forest school adventure.

Refilling our ‘Compassion Cup’. An introduction to needs-led practice for people who work in the outdoors. @ Woolton Woods, Liverpool
Oct 24 @ 09:00 – 16:30

Come and join us for a day exploring human needs!

We will respond to the needs of the group (of course we will), but we anticipate that these ingredients will form part of our time together:

– Understanding needs, their relation to our behaviours and the behaviour of our participants;

– Unmet needs and what they might look like: how do we respond appropriately, and how do we look after needs in a time of dysregulation?

– Marrying up theories with our experiences and discussing the challenges of applying them;

– The dynamics and quality of human connection;

– Working with needs in nature and woodlands: the problems and possibilities.

Who is this for? Those who work in Forest School and other participant-centred settings as well as for those who aspire to develop their practice in this area. You may be experienced in theories but are looking for time and space to share experiences with others. Or you may be new to these ideas but are excited to learn.

The course will be facilitated by Lily Horseman and Froo Signore. As Forest School practitioners and facilitators they will draw from their own rich experience of relating theories and practice. There is nothing they like more than unpicking the juicy aspects of human behaviour and how this shows up in their session delivery.
